MOMO Challenge

27 February 2019

This is a very sinister and ‘fake’ challenge that preys on young people’s vulnerabilities and encourages them to conduct dangerous activities by threatening harm to them and their loved ones.
It is very easy to dismiss this concern, but it has come to my attention that the challenge is a hot topic of discussion for our children, not only on the playground, but also via social media. We would normally associate this type of phenomenon with ‘chat’-based social media, but there is clear evidence of its influence across Youtube and gaming platforms, such as X-Box Live and so on.
With this in mind, I would like to draw your attention to this advice sheet, which explains a little about the issue and provides you with guidance on how to discuss this with your children and also how to set up your online security. The best pieces of advice I feel we can offer is for you to speak with your children to reiterate that the challenge and associated threats and intimidation are not real and if you or your children do come across anything suspicious, block and report the issue to the relevant online provider or administrator as quickly as possible.
I hope that this information is helpful and that we can continue to work together to safeguard our children.
