Our Business In The Community Partner, Thomas Vale Construction, challenged our students to design a product that would help improve health and safety on construction sites. Students were invited to a construction site to carry out research and come up with a new concept. On the 2nd July, five teams of students were invited to Thomas Vale Head Office in Stourport to present their ideas to Thomas Vale senior managers. The presentations took place in “Dragons’ Den” style.

Each team entered the board room to the Dragons’ Den theme tune and pitched their idea to five dragons. The dragons listened to the presentation and then questioned the students about their ideas before deciding if they were going to invest or were out! The products consisted of a helmet integrated with Google glass, a rubber suit containing trackers and sensors, The LumiSign, effective for day and night, the E.P.U (the electronic safety unit) and a sensor that ejects a parachute.

Staff from Thomas Vale were really impressed with the design concepts. They highly praised our students for their professionalism and their ability to discuss their ideas in depth and answer challenging questions. The winning team was Christie Road Safety with their safety helmet integrated with Google glass. Thomas Vale are looking at working with a University to develop the design further.
