English is taught in seven classrooms that each have an interactive whiteboard, enhancing students’ learning through a wide range of teaching and learning possibilities available. Further to this, we have a large stock cupboard that is constantly refreshed with engaging titles to stimulate the interest of all students. In order to make the most of the excellent resources available to students, all English staff are committed to getting the most out of all students, of all abilities, at each of the different key stages.

As English is one of the core subjects, it has a very high profile in our school. In English lessons, students will practise skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening; forming the foundation of success in all subjects. In addition to this, we are committed to equipping students with the functional skills that are essential for success in life outside school, particularly in the world of work.

Key Stage 3 - English

In Year 9, we have a commitment to support students of all abilities to achieve to the highest possible level. With this in mind, we teach in ability groups, with literacy trained support staff available to support in lessons. With recently reviewed and adapted schemes of work, brought in line with the most recent educational policies, students will be exposed to a range of different text types and be encouraged to express their own personal responses. Year 9 is a year of consolidation of the core skills that are taught throughout Key Stage 3 and our schemes of work have been produced in consultation with our main feeder middle schools. Year 9 is also a year of preparation for GCSE; something else which we are keen to reflect in the topics studied.

Course Content
In Years 10 and 11, students study GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature. We follow the Edexcel syllabus, which we feel is the most appropriate for the students at our school. The focus of study is designed to suit different ability learners, and their strengths, across years 10 and 11. All students will study English Language and English Literature during these two years, taking exams at the end of year 11. Progress is regularly tracked to identify where students are being most successful, whilst also highlighting areas where additional support is required.  All students are given an equal opportunity to succeed and our ability setting supports this.

Key Stage 5 - English Literature

Exam Success
Three exams – Drama (30%); Prose (20%); Poetry (20%) – and coursework (20%) for A-level; two exams – Poetry and Drama (60%) and Prose (40%) – at AS.

English Literature is a Russell Group Facilitating subject. The Entry Requirement for English Literature is a minimum of a grade B at GCSE.

However, we will always consider individual cases on their merits and students with 5+ good GCSE C grades and above may be interviewed by the relevant Head of Subject staff member and/or one of the Leadership Group to assess their suitability for the course.

The Russell Group represents 24 leading UK universities.  A Level Subjects that are viewed as facilitating subjects are: Maths and further maths; Physics; Biology; Chemistry; History; Geography; Modern languages and English Literature. To study these subjects at A Level at Trinity High School and Sixth Form Centre, a minimum of a grade B is required in that subject at GCSE.

Contribution to SMSC
In English we explore a wide range of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, which allow the consideration of a range of values and beliefs, attitudes towards others, and diversity. We also study a number of British texts as well as a from different cultures meaning students have many opportunities to consider their social and cultural roots.
